How it works

Three parts: a small probe at home, the server that collects the measurements, and your personal page. No router port is opened at home: the probe sends the data to the server, encrypted.

  1. 1

    The probe checks

A Raspberry Pi connected to the router pings every device you choose, usually every 60 seconds, and reads the FRITZ!Box if there is one.

  2. 2

    The server remembers

Every measurement reaches the server over HTTPS and stays in the history for as long as you want. If the probe stops reporting, the server notices on its own.

  3. 3

    You get alerted

When a device stops responding you get a message on Telegram, by email or with ntfy, and another one when it is back. Everything is also on your page.

What it checks

Devices

A ping every 60 seconds, availability over the last 24 hours and 7 days for every device, with the full history one tap away.

FRITZ!Box and Wi-Fi

Line usage, Wi-Fi networks, guest network and mesh network with the link quality of every repeater.

Security

Open-port check of your devices: quick, standard or in-depth across more than 1100 ports, with the risky ones highlighted.

SpeedTest

Download, upload and latency measured by your home probe against Cloudflare's servers, whenever you ask.

What you see

Your personal page tells you at once whether all is well, and when something is wrong it shows what, since when and for how long. On the phone it becomes a list you read at a glance.

Availability

24 hours7 days

One cell every half hour for each device: green responded, yellow slow or some pings lost, red not responding, grey paused. Tapping a cell opens the history of that moment.

respondedslow or pings lostnot respondingpaused

On the phone

One row per device with a mini chart and milliseconds; the actions are behind «⋯».

Ping history

Round-number scale, a red band over periods with no response and an optional «slow» threshold for each device.

Map

Server, probes and devices in a tree, with each one's response time. On the phone, an indented list.

Alerts, in practice

One alert when something breaks, one when it is fixed. No floods: if a device comes and goes, it waits a few checks before writing to you.

  • Priority per device. High alerts at the first lost ping (the house alarm), low waits longer (the TV), never just keeps an eye on it.
  • Channel per alert type. For example devices on Telegram, Wi-Fi guests by email only.
  • Pause. Moving the printer? Pause its ping for a few hours, with a note.
  • Reminders. If a serious problem lasts a long time, a reminder tells you it is not solved yet.
  • Beyond devices. Probe off or without Internet, new guests on the Wi-Fi, slow mesh repeaters, risky ports found by the security check, SpeedTest results.

Use cases

Everyday home

You know right away if the router, the NAS or the camera has stopped, before you find out when you need them.

FRITZ!BoxNASPrinterTV

Holiday home

The probe stays there all year: if power or Internet goes out you know, and you know when it is back.

Cameras and security

A camera that does not respond does not record: high priority, alert at the first missed check.

Wi-Fi and guests

With a FRITZ!Box you see line usage, who joins the guest network and how the mesh repeaters are doing.

Getting started

You receive an invitation, prepare the probe and connect it to the router. The guided installation does the rest, even on a Raspberry Pi Zero. Alerts arrive on Telegram, by email or with ntfy.

I already have an invitation

Raspberry PiZero is fine too, or a Linux mini PC
microSD 8 GBclass A1 recommended
Network cablerecommended; Wi-Fi works too
< 2% CPUon a Pi Zero with about ten devices

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to open ports on the router?

No. The probe connects to the server over HTTPS, like a browser: nobody outside can reach your network through netmon.

Does it work without a FRITZ!Box?

Yes. The ping works with any router and any device that has an IP address. A FRITZ!Box only adds information on the line, Wi-Fi, guests and mesh.

What happens if the power or Internet goes out at home?

The probe stops sending reports and after a few minutes the server tells you it is not reporting. When it is back, you get a «probe online again» message.

How many devices can I monitor?

It depends on your subscription: each subscription type has its own number of devices. A probe on a Raspberry Pi Zero with about ten devices uses less than 2% of the CPU.

Can I have several homes?

Yes: one probe per home, all on the same page, each with its own devices and its own group on the Dashboard.

How long is the data kept?

By default they never expire. On your page you decide how long to keep them, and you can download everything or delete your data at any time.

How much does it cost?

NetMon Home tool is a weekly, monthly or yearly subscription: the subscription type sets how many devices you can monitor. Besides the subscription you only need the probe (a Raspberry Pi) with a microSD card.

Which languages are available?

The personal page and the alerts are in Italian, English, German and French: everyone picks their own.
